Live 3D face swap: what the search term really means

Live 3D face swap can mean an uploaded-photo tool, a VTuber avatar or a real-time webcam swap. How the three differ, and what to expect from each.

Search for "live 3D face swap" and you will not find one product category. The results mix a free online tool branded Live3D, 3D avatar software for VTubers, and real-time webcam face swap that has nothing 3D about its output. This guide separates the three, explains what each actually does, and is honest about where our product sits: LiveFaceSwap.co is a real-time 2D face swap in the browser on LiveFaceSwap V1, billed at 0.6 credits per live second. It is not a 3D avatar and it does not process uploaded video files.

The three things the phrase can mean

  • A tool brand. "Live 3D" or Live3D is the name of a website (live3d.io) that hosts VTuber software and a set of free AI face swap tools for photos, GIFs and videos. You upload a source face and a target image or clip, then wait for a render. Nothing happens live on your camera.
  • A 3D avatar. VTuber software such as Live3D's VTuber Maker or VSeeFace uses a webcam to drive a rigged 3D character. That is face tracking, not face swap: the model copies your head, eyes and mouth, and the character stays a 3D model rather than becoming another real person.
  • A real-time 2D swap. A camera feed plus a reference image is processed frame by frame and comes back as live video. The "live" refers to latency, and the output is a flat video frame — there is no 3D model to rotate around.

Only the third one is what most people mean when they search for a live face swap they can use on a call or stream. It is also what LiveFaceSwap.co does.

What 3D avatar software does

A 3D avatar rig has bones and blendshapes, and tracking software reads head pose, eye gaze, blinks and mouth shapes from your webcam to move those controls. The result is a character that follows you in real time; it does not look like you and it does not adopt someone else's face.

VSeeFace, for example, is a free Windows program that animates VRM or VSFAvatar characters from webcam tracking, can expose a virtual camera to OBS, and supports the VMC protocol for external tracking devices. Live3D's VTuber Maker offers a similar idea with public 3D avatars and an OBS virtual camera. These tools are a good fit for streaming as an anime or cartoon character, and a poor fit for "put my friend's face on me" — because no identity transfer happens.

What uploaded-media face swap does

Live3D's free face swap pages are the uploaded-media kind: pick a source image with the face you want, pick a target photo, GIF or video, and generate. The same site also offers head swap and multi-face variants. File limits are published on the page, and the render arrives in seconds rather than in real time.

This category is useful for a still image or a short clip, and it is what most "3D face swap" tutorials actually demonstrate. The "3D" in the brand name does not mean the output is 3D: you get a normal 2D image or video file. You cannot join a live call with it, and you cannot steer it with your face.

What real-time 2D face swap is

A browser tool such as LiveFaceSwap.co captures your camera, sends the frames through a real-time model in a cloud session, and plays the generated video back beside your camera. The model applies the identity from one reference image to your face in each frame, which is why your expressions and head movement appear in the output but the face is not yours.

Because there is no rig and no 3D reconstruction of your head, the swap is strongest facing the camera and weakest at sharp profile angles, under fast movement or when part of your face is occluded. A clear reference photo of the target face, even lighting and a stable connection matter more than any setting. On our site the modes are Face Swap (identity), Restyle (style and scene look) and Try-On (outfit), all on LiveFaceSwap V1. A session caps at 900 seconds, unused reservation is refunded when you stop, and the camera stream is not recorded.

When each one fits

  • You want to appear as another identity on a live call or stream, on a normal laptop: real-time 2D face swap. A browser tool needs no GPU; a local app can also do it but asks for a capable graphics card.
  • You want to stream as a 3D character whose mouth and head follow yours: 3D avatar software. Add a virtual camera so OBS and call apps can pick up the model.
  • You want one photo or one clip with a swapped face, edited afterwards: an uploaded-media tool.
  • You want a full-body performance or a scene with two people replaced: none of these. That is AI video generation with motion references, a different workflow covered in our hotel lobby trend guide.

Honest expectations for a live swap

  • It is a preview, not a recording. The output is generated for the live session; we do not record the camera stream, and there is no file to download when you stop. If you need a recording, capture the window with OBS on your side.
  • The effect is on the face, not the body. Hairline, body, clothes and background stay yours unless a mode is explicitly changing them.
  • Angle and light dominate quality. Fast turns, hand-over-face moments and dim rooms all soften the illusion, whichever tool you use.
  • No 3D avatar output. If what you actually want is a virtual character for streaming, use VTuber software instead; it is the better tool for that job.
  • No system camera device yet. Our desktop app and virtual camera are coming soon. Today the browser output is captured with OBS or a screen share. The guide to using the studio in OBS walks through that setup.
  • Rules apply. You must be 18+, use faces you own or have permission to use, and disclose AI-altered video when someone could mistake it for real footage.

Where LiveFaceSwap.co fits

If you want to try a real-time webcam swap without installing anything, the browser studio is the shortest path. It runs Face Swap, Restyle and Try-On on LiveFaceSwap V1, charges 0.6 credits per live second, gives new accounts 10 free credits, and sells one-time packs from $10 for 1,000 credits that never expire. Quarterly subscriptions start at $10/month for 650 credits. The desktop app and virtual camera are not available yet and are listed as coming soon; the browser studio is what ships today.

If instead you want a 3D character, a rendered photo swap or a full performance recreation, the honest answer is that a live 2D tool is the wrong category — and the sections above point to the right one.
