What makes a good reference photo for real-time face swap

Lighting, angle and framing tips that make a live AI face swap look more stable and more like the reference.

Front-facing beats artistic

A real-time model has to map the reference face onto every frame of your video. A straight-on portrait with both eyes visible gives it the most information. Strong profile angles, heavy shadows or tilted heads make the result drift.

Even light, no obstructions

Choose a photo with soft, even light across the face. Avoid sunglasses, masks, hands in front of the face and hair covering the eyes. Busy makeup or face paint can be transferred unpredictably.

Resolution and crop

The face should take up a good part of the image — a head-and-shoulders crop works well. Very small faces in group photos lose detail. JPG, PNG or WebP under 10 MB is ideal.

Match yourself to the reference

Your own camera matters too: face the light source, keep your face centred and avoid fast turns. Similar head shape and hairline between you and the reference usually gives a more natural blend.

Only use faces you have the right to use

Upload your own photos, AI-generated characters, or people who have clearly agreed. Using someone's face without permission — or to impersonate them — is against our acceptable use policy.
